Is there a way to display products in a "slideshow" style?

In a typical slideshow you have thumbnails of all the images spanning multiple pages, when you click an image to view larger it shows the single image but has a previous image, next image and "index" link.
Ideally I would like a customer to click the thumbnail and be taken to the larger image for description & ordering. From that page they could then click "Next Image" to page through the images one by one. If they want to go back to the Main category they are in (which is a hidden category) they need a buttong taking them to "Current Category". Or they could click the "Previous Image" link to go backwards.
Something like this is shown on this java shopping cart:
