Just starting to implement 7.0 on our site. From what I can tell, the largest product image allowed is 220px. Is there a way to have that image open up in a new window larger - perhaps 500px by 500px when clicked?

I suppose it matters on what you sell - but I am a firm believer that professional photography of products and the ability to have tha image larger on the screen to show detail - provides better information to the customer and in the end a happier customer.

Larger images are definitely better than smaller images.

You need to give the customer as much detail to look at as possible.

Our thumbnails are all 100x150 and our larger images are all 333x500. But we also use highslide to extra images which are upto 600x600.

I have done testing on image size and for us these sizes work best, but for me as a customer bigger is best.
