Hi!
I've been asked to look into a problem with an existing VP ASP site. I have experience with ASP, but I've never used VP ASP before.
The problem is that the site required advanced options for the products. An example: You should be able to choose a product - let's say a t-shirt. Then choose color, size etc. Not all products have the same options, but so far, so good.
Then you should choose an image or a text to be embroydered upon the t-shirt, and there are about 1000 to choose from - too many to put in a drop down list. This is where the problems start... Is there a good way to acheive this with VP?
Now this is solved by choosing the image/text first, and then choosing what to put it on afterwards. The problem is that not all products have the same size/color options, so someone might order a t-shirt in a color that doesn't exist.
I hope you understand what I've been trying to say, and that perhaps someone here has an idea of how to fix this? |

Have a look at the developer guides at http://www.vpasp.com/helpnotes/ Assuming that you are using an earlier version that 6.50 they are in the Archived section there |

I can't find any developer guide for version 6.0, which is the one we use. Can anyone tell me if what we went to do is even possible with version 6.0? |

With VP-ASP there is a feature called Inventory Products. This allows you to create a parent product and multiple child products for that parent.
So for example you have a parent product called T-Shirt.
The child products would be small red, small blue, small green etc.
This way you can use stock control on your site and each t-shirt will only have the products display that are available.
For the text you could use a feature called UserText. This allows you to have a field added to each product where the customer can insert their on text into.
You can also add charges to the UserText field so if they enter data into the field an extra charge is added to the cost.
You can use the Version 6.50 User Guide as options like Usertext and inventory Products work the same between both releases.
Hope this helps
Thanks Cam

Hi!
I think I may have described the problem a bit poorly. The main problem is that the embroidery most often is an image rather than a text... And there are about 600 to choose from.
The problem is how can we give a good interface to choosing between 600 sub-products for a main product (t-shirt)? |

You can make a product feature as a radio button or check box, the only difference is if you mark multiple as 'yes' and define each one as <img src="images/site/filename.gif"> or something similar. |

That still doesn't solve my problem of having to have the customer look through a list of 600 images. What I'm looking for is a way to make product features available through a custom interface, with categories etc. But I'm starting to think that is not possible with VP ASP? |

VPASP is an open source solution so if the default out of the box system does not exactly suit your needs it could certainly be modified to meet almost any requirement.
If you can work out how this should work we may be better able to help you work out the best way to achieve it.
Thanks Cam

I think what might be best, from a design point of view, would be to have a popup for the "image selection" (ie called from a "select an image" button on the product page) which gives you a popup gallery with paging on it, and then use javascript within that so that when someone clicks on an image on the popup it'll post the corresponding filename back to the feature for the image on the product page and then close the gallery popup.
you could, in theory, use products/categories for that popup "gallery", but a more flexible way might be to have it custom-built; depends on the nature of your images/site etc.

I assume either way (with or without using products/categories) would involve changing the code? That would realistically not be an option in this case - at least not yet. I guess we will just have to tag this one as "not possible" in this case :) |

Hi MonkeyRex, changing the code in VPASP isn't as scary as it may seem and if you don't fancy tackling the job yourself there are a few people on here who I'm sure wouldn't mind quoting for making the changes for you.
Your need is a pretty specific one and I'm not sure you're going to find a solution with any off the shelf ecommerce package. Do you have any working examples (ie on a competitors website) that does something you want to replicate on your site?
Each day that I spend making changes to my VPASP site is a day I'm genuinely impressed at the amount of work that's gone into it. I've developed my own bespoke solutions before and they don't come close to covering the features and the flexibility of VPASP. I'm currently redeveloping an ecommerce site that uses Actinic at present (we're scrapping Actinic entirely and starting from scratch with VPASP) and I'm shocked at how crude other commercial ecommerce packages can be. |
