In th eadmin section the xsessiontimeout setting is set to 20 mins. The notes say "Do not set a time more than 20 or it may affect overall system performance".

Simple question - what happens if you increase this?

Thanks

Steve

usually it wouldn't matter to be honest; usually it you set it above 20 minutes your host will just ignore it and override it with a general server setting which is usually 20 minutes.

if your host/server has a longer idle-time allowed though, it means that the amount of memory that the site uses would increase.

Thanks Simon.

Does this mean though that if a customer doesn't finish shopping with 20 minutes their basket will empty?

Thanks

no; as long as they move around between pages on your site then their basket will stay current. They don't need to complete all their stuff within 20 minutes. Instead, if they don't move page at all on your site for 20 minutes (eg they add something to their basket, then have dinner, then come back again after half an hour) then their basket would be empty. It normally wouldn't happen, because people wouldn't normally be idle on a site for more than 5 minutes or so (eg while they try and find their credit card).

They don't need to be moving around on the checkout pages for the basket to stay in place; moving around between any asp file will keep the session active. As soon as they move to another asp, the countdown resets/restarts and they then have another 20 minutes.
