 How to handle refund with credit card?

As it has been recommended, it is not a good idea to keep credit card numbers in the database. I have it set up that way and never see the credit card number at all because AuthorizeNet hides it on return. So let's say later the customer returns a product and you have to issue a refund. But how do you do it without having the credit card number? You obviously have to get it again from the customer but some will not want to send it via email and if you don't have a toll-free number, they won't want to pay a long distance phone charge to give it to you. So the only thing I can think of is to get their phone number and call them to get the credit card number.

How does everybody else handle crediting refunds?

I believe Authorisenet have a refund facility in their online management section.
