So Adobe have decided that ASP is a DEAD technology

So much so that they have now removed the ability to open and edit ASP files in DREAMWEAVER.

So where does this leave us all????

I know DM pretty much inside out. Any ideas?

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

ASP itself is not dead but Adobe seem to not care too much.

Found this wiki post with some good info on it about ASP:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Server_Pages

Looks like if you want to use DW you will need to stay with an older release unfortunately.

Thank you.

As a follow with VPASP 7.xx it is mainly the HTML template files and the CSS files that need editing to change the look.

For more in depth engine room code changes there is a raft of editors out there you can use.

I have not test driven the DW but will be doing so in the coming weeks to see how it runs.

Thank you.

We have finally installed latest DW here and have been able to open and edit ASP pages as normal.

All you need to do is open them and work on them as normal.

Did you get it worked out?

Thank you.

To clarify, Adobe Dreamweaver will be able to edit ASP files like it has forever, what Adobe has dropped is the Data and ASP Objects. You will no longer have the ability create and manage databases with DW using ASP/VBScript. I think they have been gone since CS6 but you could still add them from a directory called DisabledFeatures under \Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Abode Dreamweaver CSXX\configuration.

I use version CS5.5 and do not have any plans to upgrade to any newer version for the same reason. There are still millions of websites out there still using ASP. ASP.NET is the logical progression but that is easier said than done. You can use VBScript with ASP.NET but most programmers don''t like to mix new and old. They try to use either VB.Net or C# in the projects but many other languages are supported.

Mark,

Go to Control Panel, open "Default Programs" and "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".

After all extensions load, scroll down a bit and find ".asp". Check the name of the current default program. With ".asp" selected, you can click on "change program" and choose Dreamweaver. If you don''t see it on the list, you can always click on "browse" and find dreamweaver.exe. After you make those changes, Windows 7 will start opening all .asp files with dreamweaver.

Let me know if you have any problems.
Good luck

PD

So am I the only person who still uses Front Page to edit .asp and .html pages? We don''t use the front page components (yuk) but the old program does well with color coding but we mainly use it for code purposes and keeping things together.

PS: I was told ASP was dead 14 years ago by a newly trained Cold Fusion programmer.

lol Dave

No you''re not the only one still using Front Page. It''s still my preferred choice for asp coding - plus plain old notepad :)

OK i found in DW if you right clicked ASP file there was only one option of "OPEN"

However after following pdipeppas idea of associating file type in default programs at control panel in windows , i found this CHANGED ( after restarts ) how the right click acted in DW , it allowed a new option of " OPEN WITH " .... so i can now right click a file in DW and finally it opens in DW , its not doing it automatically , indeed its still reporting no editor available , but right clicking and using "open with " is working

what a pain in ze erse :-) ... Hi Mark :-)
