Hey folks,
I've woken this morning in a panic... I ordered a new Dell laptop late last night which has Vista pre-installed. Can anyone tell me whether the VP-ASP cart works with Vista? If not I'm going to feel pretty stupid and have to get on the phone fast!

OK, I've been told this was a stupid question (not by this forum I hasten to add) as any new operating system would support ASP which is all that is required.
So thanks anyway but no-one need now take the trouble to respond.

I'd be interested/curious to know if you have any problems generally with vista; I'm dreading the time when I need to buy a new pc/laptop which comes with vista on it.
I'd say that even though someone might have told you that it was a stupid question, I don't think it is because, for example, vista might have bugs in it that don't deal with IIS properly etc, so it's still a relevant question I reckon. Same applies with how vista deals with things like access databases and the jet drivers.
If anyone's used vista for iis/asp/access etc, then I'd be interested to know if they had any problems.
(if someone told you it was a stupid question, then they're just displaying their own ignorance I reckon; it's a perfectly valid question given how buggy microsoft code is on early releases)
Any problems related to this would be caused by the vista side rather than the vpasp side, but it'd be good to have a heads-up to see if there are any relevant vista bugs that cause problems with asp/iis/jet etc.
A good example of that kind of heads-up aspect, where vpasp is fine as-is but where microsoft can cause problems if you change things is the 8k recordset bug:

yep; i'd agree with that; never use a microsoft product/upgrade for the first year or 2 after release if possible.
the only reason I'd ever use one early-on is when I'm forced into buying a new pc/laptop and it's the only version available.
luckily for me, I spilt my tea on my old laptop before vista came in and not afterwards.

Thanks for your advice guys. I rang Dell who are so efficient that my order was already in production and in fact shipped this morning. However they did say they would credit me £10+VAT towards the cost of buying XP and then their tech support would talk me through uninstalling Vista and then installing XP if needed. Can't say fairer than that. I might just see how it goes first though and let you know what I find.

Hi,
I just came out to Turkey to work for a couple of weeks, and (a) needed a new laptop quick before I left and then (b) could only get one with Vista in the time scale I had, but having said to myself before I went to pick it up "I don't want Vista I've had too many problems with my upgrade on my home pc", I gave in and bought it!
Firstly, pre-installed Vista is a VAST improvement on an upgraded version from XP, but secondly, I did have huge problems getting IIS7 to run ASP pages! Rest assured, it's possible, and I'm developing my first VPASP site on it as we speak, and having no Vista-related problems. A friend of mine had no problems with IIS7, so I won't give you the whole chapter and verse, but I'll keep an eye on the forum and help out if you have the same problems I did! The first and simplest thuing to note is that when you add IIS under the Windows components dialogue, make sure you expand it and add ASP support as well, as it's not included by default. If it still doesn't work after that I can help.

I'm trying to get the latest version of Snitz Forums 2000 (the application that is running the VPASP forums, actually) with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 on Vista Business 64-bit OS. I installed SQL Server, created a new DB for the forums app, and copied the forum files in to a folder called "forums" under wwwroot. Now, whenever I go to "http://server/forums/setup.asp" I get an HTTP 500 error immediately saying "The website cannot display the page".
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Matt,
Just to get a starting point - can you display ANY asp pages under your IIS7 system, or is it just the one you have created by the method you describe, in that specific directory? For instance, if you have a simple default.htm somewhere which displays ok, then rename it to default.asp - does it still work? Also try the same thing in different directories, then we can revisit the steps I had to take to make mine work, or try something else!

| I tried setting up IIS7 on Vista Business on my work laptop to run a test environment for VPASP. I had no luck with it, while I may not be the best ASP programmer out there I am pretty good at IT stuff, being a one-man IT departmet at work. After a few hours I gave up on it, while I am not saying it can't be done, it is not easy. I just added a VPASP cart directory on my company's Server 2003 machine to run the test copy and after setting the proper permissions it worked, took about 10 mins. I am running the live copy on a host just because of the overhead that this cart will have once live. I hope you don't intend to try to run a VPASP live off a Vista machine. Since you didn't post again after my original reply I assume that you sorted out your problems? I've just started doing another site under Vista/IIS7 so the steps I took to get Classic ASP pages working are fresh in my mind if you need any help!

I am trying to install vpasp on my new laptop with vista business edition and I have no luck get it to work. I installed it and added my order number and changed the permission as explained in quick referene guide as well as on the forum. When I do diag_dbtest I get all fail message for database but file test passes. I also can not access admin page. I get error unknown langadmin03 error. Any help will be really appreciated.

I went through the document and installed IIS7. I am trying to customize and I want to include a file in shopcartformat. When I try to do that it gives me

The website cannot display the page
HTTP 500
Most likely causes:
The website is under maintenance.
The website has a programming error.
What you can try:
Refresh the page.
Go back to the previous page.

I took all the code out of my new asp file and left

It still gives me error. I take the include statement out then it works so I know it doesn't like include. It works fine on windows xp .
