I was wondering whether or not anyone knows of an existing addon that deals with this aspect, and if not, would anyone else here find it useful ?
the problem is....
say you want to change your card encryption key, but you want to still be able to view the card numbers from orders which used your old key, by changing the key you'll make new orders' card numbers viewable but the old ones will no longer be viewable.
I ended up creating a script which decrypts with the relevant old/new card key and then re-encrypts with the new key, and then sets the newly encrypted card number on the orders, so that both the old+new orders' card numbers are viewable using the new key.
Would anyone else find this useful ?
I know that it's highly un-advised to store historic orders' card numbers, but during the cross-over between old+new keys there may be a few straggling orders which become unprocessable because of this problem, so I'm curious if anyone else has this problem and if they'd find the script useful?

Of course this would be useful, especially if your site has recurring billing, lots of accounts that buy regularly. You could probably write something that would re-encrypt every week or month or day for that matter. What I'm wondering is what kind of pillow talk you have, if you are coming up with way out stuff like this? Life has come a long way since the Enigma Machine
