I am confused by the following in shop configuration:

xproducttemplate
Used with the Option Package as the HTML template to be used when generating extended description page for a product.

xproducttemplateinvent
Used with the Option Package as the HTML template to be used when generating extended description page for a product.

Which is the one to modify?

Dear Sharon,

It should read:

xproducttemplate
Used with the Option Package as the HTML template to be used when generating extended description page for a product.

xproducttemplateinvent
Used with the Option Package as the HTML template to be used when generating extended description page for a product with child products.

The invent templates are for the new inventory product display system.
