Instead of manually entering products into the cross selling field, which is a huge amount of work, it would be much easier to run a database of the latest combinations of products that customers order. (Such as done by Amazon.com) With a limit of say 4 items. Example: The customer ordering a brown hat also orders a brown pair of gloves. The product number combinations are stored in the database so the next customer ordering a brown hat or brown gloves sees the message - Customers ordering this product also ordered:
The cross selling database is therefore automatically compiled and updated by the most recent 4 sales of each product.

Hi guys,
canadasurplus, the add-on from BigYellowZone is definetly the way to go. I was going to sit down and write something, but by the time I worked out roughly what was required, I found the add-on to be just the ticket. It was quick to get, easy to install and setup.
Adds easily to the product template, so you can customise how you want it to look.
I suggest go see the guys at www.BigYellowZone.com, it will be worth the visit....
Good luck with your site....
cheers

Simon,
I don't understand the difference between the two:
Also-Bought: http://bigyellowzone.com/shopexd.asp?id=97
Enhanced/Secondary Cross-selling: http://bigyellowzone.com/shopexd.asp?id=101
If you have the time, could you explain (dummed down to my level please) what the difference is, and what needs one fills as opposed to the other (or do some sites somehow use both, or one first then add the other later??)

It's easy to get them confused; the difference is important, but quite subtle......
Firstly, the 2 addons use completely separate addon files from each other (ie you can change/use one without effecting/using the other, so you can buy/use/tweak either/both).
Secondly, although they don't use the same addon files as each other, both of them use the same kind of formatting (ie so that you can change the header, trailer, and per-record chunks to fit your own requirements, for example to show thumbnails, or to have a different heading).
For example, you could make the "also-bought" addon use thumbnails, while leaving the "cross-selling" to not use thumbnails.
Anyway; here's what they do:
1) Cross-Selling http://bigyellowzone.com/shopexd.asp?id=101 This is really just an enhanced/extra version of the vpasp cross-selling template-field, so that you can link products together, and have a display of related products with a heading like "You might like to consider these related products..."
2) Also-bought http://bigyellowzone.com/shopexd.asp?id=97 This uses an amazon-style "Customers who bought this, also bought these..." information block displaying the relevant products. For this you wouldn't need to enter any data (as opposed to the cross-selling which you explicitly set for each product) because it finds all the products for you by just cross-querying the orders, products, and customers.
We use both of these on our own site, because for our business/site "related/similar products" (the cross-selling addon) are an essential part of what we sell, and "also-bought" is also a very handy thing because it helps people get an idea of what other people have found useful from us. You can install/use either/both depending on the kind of things that you sell and what's relevant to your customers.

Hello,
Just wanted to mention that we purchased the add-on from Simon Barnaby at BigYellowZone.com
It took a little tweaking to get it looking exactly the way we wanted but the end result seems very good for us.
You can see an example of the cross selling on our site here - http://www.fcsurplus.ca/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=8841
Our thanks to Simon,
Bob
