It was bad in version 6 and no better in version 7- the constant session eviction...

I wont say timeout as I'm busy working, click the update and BAM "Unauthorised User" or whatever is says ( I should know by now, it happens often enough)...

My bank is less secure than this!

I've seen I'm not the only one with this very annoying problem, plase VPASP, build some way of altering/turning this off...

Hi there

This is something your host needs to update for you.

Ensure they have your IIS application pool time out set to 20 minutes. The default is 5 minutes only.

HK Prog has an admin module I think that may help.

I have not used it so not completely sure of the details but it uses cookies.

Thank you.

Thanks for the swift reply...

Getting an ISP to change their IIS settings for one user is not really an option.

I run my own IIS servers and I would'nt muck around changing application pools just because someone said their application kept timing out!

Unfortunately this app is running on someone elses system so IIS change is not an option :(

It might be the cache issue; if IIS is setup to cache all the asp files to memory rather than disk, then it'll use a huge amount of memory and cause session-dropping, see also:
http://vpasp.com/virtprog/vpaspforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13874

Whenever we've had this problem we've asked our host to set the cache (which has *always* sorted the problem out) - there's no memory leaks in vpasp if you're patched/up-to-date, it's all on the server/host side that you get those issues.

(I'm assuming this isn't just a normal timeout, it's where your session's actually getting dropped even though you're active).

So, that's for the forced-session-dropping problem, but for the aspect of being logged out when idle, howard's addon is really handy; it's one of those things which looks simple to do but is deceptively complex to achieve behind the scenes, and is also one of those things that once you're using it you'll wonder why you didn't get it before. (one of our clients bought it from howard the other day, and it's a joy to work on that client's admin system without having the constant "press a button soon or you'll have to login again" threat hanging over your head; it makes for a much less stressful time playing around in admin)
