Hello All,
I know this is a stupid question but i have been playing for hours and cant get it to work.

I want to increase the width of the left column -the one that contains categories featured products etc.
I have been through shop.css and have tried changing many things but cannot get it right.

According to shop.css -i have version 6.50- i should change the % size within the left section

eg

/* Left column- categories, currency, language etc */
#left {
/* Styles */
background:#333333;
-moz-border-radius: 1em;
-webkit-border-radius: 1em;
width:25%; /* Change to alter width of left column */

i have changed this many time without success- i am assuming i should change other settings as well , but nothing has worked so far.

i know this is really simple , but sometimes they are the hard ones!
cheers
Martin

Hi Martin,

you could try removing the background and border styles and just test with the width setting. This may sound silly too, but have you actually uploaded the changed shop.css and reloaded your site? It's caught me out a couple of times. Then you can try adding the background and border styles.

I have worked out one way to do it!

i wouldnt be surprised if it is not the correct way but i changed the padding settings here

#left .box { /* General style of each box in left column */
padding:10px 40px;
font-size:90%;
border:1px solid #eee;
margin-bottom:5px;

}

from 10px,10px to 10px,40px and that made the left column wider!

I definately learn more than one thing every day
Thanks for your input Carrol

Hi Martin,

in shop.css try changing the width of the main content area eg

#main {
font-size:90%;
line-height:18px;
width:75%;
}

If this doesn't work, maybe somebody else can help

Hi carrol,
I have just discovered something intriguing .
it appears that when i change the %width of left it does change the left column width - but only on all the other pages and not the main page .
now i have got to work out why it isnt changing the frontpage
how strange

Carrol,
I followed your advice.
whenever i get confused i find its best to start again.
I reinstalled the backed up copy of shop.css and changed the width setting first before anything else.

worked perfectly.

perhaps all of my amendments had confused things somewhat.
thank you for pointing me in the right direction
