I want to alter the words and links etc in the left navigation panel

I have seen references to shoppage_header.htm but cant see where the change the links/categories.
Can anyone please direct me to the right file

I found a comment that the links are automatically generated from the categories table.
I created a number of categories and applied these to the products table.
The categories show correctly in the left menu and the url display at the bottom of the page looks OK but when selected the items are not correct.
Any ideas please?
