How to automatically add item B when item A is added to cart?

We are considering upgrading to 6.x and hope a feature is available. We have the need to automatically add a specific item to a customers cart when another item is added.

Imagine this:

A customer is shopping for one of our Widgets. Our customers ALWAYS buy the extended warranty when they purchase our Widgets (its an industry thing trust me they always buy the warranty). To remove confusion, we need to be able to automatically add the widget_warranty_item to their cart (as a separate line item) when they add the Widget to their cart.

The extended functions of this feature would include:
1) Remove widget_warranty_item when the widget_item is removed from cart;
2) Adjust the quantity of widget_warranty_item when quantity of Widgets is adjusted within the cart (5 Widgets = 5 Warranties);
3) Show quantity of widget_warranty_item without allowing it (alone) to be removed or quantity adjusted.

Just to head-off suggestions on work-arounds, adding the cost of the widget_item and widget_warranty_item together in one product doesn't work because widget_item & widget_warranty_item have different tax rates and are booked separately by customers (and us).

After reading the latest documentation, nothing like this jumps out at me. Has anyone tried to implement this?

Thanks in advance.
