The best solution might be to upgrade to version 5.5 since it has the breadcrumbs built in. Otherwise, post the details of what you have tried to do, along with the result including any specific error messages. Someone can likely help from there.
If I had more time, I could post the exact code I used to add this feature in my 5.0 cart, but I doubt it would help much more than all the examples of code already in the forum. I seem to recall that mine was very similar to this code:
