To speed up the selection process I would like my customers to be able to order items & update the cart contents without viewing the cart page (shopaddtocart.asp) until they wanted to check out or amend items. We use the minicart so changes would need to be updated in that too.

One of the reasons for this is that the breadcrumb trail is lost if you 'Continue Shopping' & we cannot rely on customers using the browser back button. Am I asking for the impossible?

Just set xstayonpage to 'yes'

The correct name is xproductstayonpage. I didn't know about this feature so thanks for the post and answer.
