During our time checking out vpasp data on various sites that we've worked on over the years, we ended up creating a tool that cross-references products, categories, and prodcategories records doing various checks, showing the relevant spurious/invalid/missing records, and having "fix data" buttons at each stage to generate missing entries and to delete spurious entries.
I'm curious if anyone on this forum would find it useful ?
This is particularly relevant to people who do bulk updates and then need to check/tweak their data, or if you just want to get rid of redundant/leftover data, or just check all your data is correct/relevant.
Would anyone here be interested in this ?
It's a biggie; kind of like an admin sub-system; 6 stages of checks; you'd be amazed at the errors in your data you'll see that you otherwise wouldn't be aware of, and having a "fix data" button to do the corrections for you is very useful!
In case anyone's curious, the checks that are done (and corresponding offending data displayed with fix options) are:
1) Invalid Categories on Matrix "fix data" will delete these spurious matrix records
2) Invalid Products on Matrix "fix data" will delete these spurious matrix records
3) Invalid Categories on Products no "fix data" available; just use the links on each record to get to the product screen and edit the categories for the product.
4) SubCategories on matrix but no parent Categories on Matrix "fix data" will generate the missing parent categories matrix records
5) Products with no Matrix entries no "fix data" available; just use the links on each record to get to the product screen and edit the categories for the product.
6) Categories with no Matrix entries "fix data" will delete the unused categories

I think I would be interested in this. I import large amounts of data almost daily and would be curious to find out if the bulk imports are causing errors or if the data is not going into the database the way vp-asp intends it to.

We've now packaged this up, documented it, and it's now available to buy as an addon:

We've used this on quite a few sites now (including our own), and it works a treat; we tidied up our product, category, and prodcategory data in 2 minutes with this tool; all we had to do was press the "fix" buttons; very handy!
