You should only do this type of test if you really, really trust the site that is offering it. Otherwise, you may have just given a dishonest hacker permission to explore your computer. If they do find a vulnerability, what stops them from telling you its secure, and then exploiting the vulnerability behind your back?

Never invite a vampire into your house. ;-)

If you are using a quality firewall, you should be fine. You can get a free software firewall from: http://www.zonelabs.com I used it for years before I installed hardware firewalls. It is simple but very effective. An independent security report I read rated ZoneAlarm more effective compared to many non-free tools such as BlackIce. It essentially makes your computer ignore all outside connection requests except for any you explicitly allow in.

GRC.com is totally upstanding and a trusted site for Millions. If you want a real thrill read the story he has on "The Classic DoS Attack Report". It is a story about these little teenagers who have hijacked thousands of computers and have little army's just waiting to attack sites at will. http://www.grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm

Mr. Gibson is a well know security expert and has offered his services for free for years.

Ah yes.....I read that report before. Its very interesting. Yes, I agree that this site is probably fine. Caution is still a good idea in general, though.
