Quietly. Credit card sur-charges are illegal.

You can add on shipping and handling charges. I am not sure about the legality of making your shipping and handling more for credit card users however. But chances are your merchant account could be canceled for such charges.

Thats interesting that credit card surcharges are illegal now. As recently as 10 years ago, all gas stations charged extra for credit card purchases. They clearly listed two gas prices: one for cash and one for credit. Have these rules changed?

You can read more about what is legal and what is not Here

The truth and lending act expired in 1984 that says surcharges are illegal but the following states below prohibit merchants from adding surcharges to credit card transactions. Which means if your doing business in those states on the internet your out of luck. On top of that Visa and MasterCard prohibit surcharges, and American Express discourages them.

* California
* Colorado
* Connecticut
* Florida
* Kansas
* Maine
* Massachusetts
* New York
* Oklahoma
* Texas

You can always offer a cash discount,

Greg

fyi - It's 100% legal in Australia.

I'd like to know how to do it too, so that it comes up as an extra line on the invoice. Has anyone implemented it yet?

Hello Awesome People,

I am in Australia, and now most of the companies add a credit card surcharge with their shopping cart programs.

Was anyone lucky enough to get an answer to this question?
How to add a surchrge when pauing by paypal.
In Australia It is great because the customer expects to pay this. :)

Companies looking to purchase a shopping cart program in Australia would flock to VP-ASP if this feature was avalable as an option.

Regards Troy
