Do the CategoryId's in the Categories table need to be sequential numbers?

In our retail store, category numbers are in ranges depending on the type of product... 1000 series are Womens Clothing products, 2000 series are Mens Clothing products, etc.

I would like to keep the category numbers consistent between the retail and online stores.

I don't think it has to be but the number is autogenerated by the database, so be careful if you manipulatae the data manually in the database.

category ids are autogenerated numbers in db, they cannot be edited because it is a primary key in categories table.
the field category id can be used in other tables so they are related. if you update certain category ids , it will causing other tables that have this relation becoming incorrect.
