I am sure this is not available as standard but would it be possible to offer customers the choice of 2 different product displays?
For example one page displaying products with images and links for ask a question & comparison etc. and one in a simplified list form with no images and far more products per page?

Some sites such as http://search.diy.com/search#w=beech offer a gallery or list view and this is the sort of thing we are looking for.

Hi Sharon,

that would be good for the customer to have the display style option. Perhaps the VP-ASP developers would consider this for the next version. I looked into this a while back but it's quite a complicated process and I never got round to taking it further, but I developed a different approach instead.

Our customers don't have that choice but they do get different displays according to which category they are viewing, either 1 column or 2. Some of our categories contain many similar looking products which our customers would prefer to see as just a list so that's what they get.

I customised shopdisplayproducts to change the column numbers according to the category, but I know it's not really what you were looking for and this was done for v6.50 but the customer feedback was good.

Sample of 1 column display (mostly lighting categories):

we did something similar to this once, but it was a customisation (on 6.5) rather than an addon.

example of detailed summary format:
http://www.rainharvest.com/stormwater-solutions.asp

example of simple summary format (ie the "list" view) -
http://www.rainharvest.com/tanks/above-ground-tanks.asp

in that instance, we still had one "column" for each product, but it gives you a completely different kind of effect/view between the 2 types.

changing it to use a different number of columns for each product would be done how carrol did it, ie you'd just override the products per column variable/checks in shopdisplayproducts.asp depending on the category.

Thanks Carrol & Simon. Both options give me something to discuss with the powers that be.

Simon, could the customer choose which product display was shown or was it dependant upon something else?

hi sharon; the display was dependent on the category (ie different categories have different displays), but there's no reason why the same logic can't be used to let the user "switch" between formats just using a session value and/or querystring argument etc.
