Poking around in SP1 install and came across a couple of things that aren't explained anywhere.

Are these implemented yet and if so what do they do?

Under products there is a field for Search Categories...under Categories there is a Search Higher Category

There is also an entry for Featured Products 2 in the product page.

You will see that if you have turned on xAjaxSearchCategory config (set Yes).
This will speed up search for categories you are looking.

If you do not want the manual search, you can actually turn it off by setting the config xAjaxSearchCategory to No.
