I have the xproductlinktellafriend set to NO, and still I get the "Tell a Friend about this product" in the extended product page

You must reload shop configuration after changing any configuration setting.

If you are using the extended description page, it is control by HTML that you have added yourself and not by shop cinfiguration values. Remove the hyperlink to shoptellafriend.asp in the template file tmp_product.htm
