What I want to accomplish is a rotating content box on various pages of my website. For example, on my homepage I currently have a customer recommendation. What I would like to have is a set of customer recommendations that rotate/fade/swap within that box as someone is reading the page.

For another example, I want to have a list of commonly asked questions, and their answers, rotate through a box at the top of the page. If someone wants more information on a given topic, they click that box.

I'm assuming that this is going to have be a javascript or flash routine. Does anyone have coding like this, or can direct to me a source I can download/purchase it?

Hi Lori,

I have actually been planning on creating a module for VPASP that uses JQuery to accomplish something similar to this.

If you are interested in getting a quote for this feel free to get in touch at http://www.creativechaos.com.au/contactus.htm

Creativechaos - Looking at your website, the Featured Clients box and the text box with the chaos quotes is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for. Is that your programming, or an add-on?

Hi Lori,

That's my own programming, but that uses Flash and XML.

I think for VPASP it would be best to use javascript and HTML/CSS. This way you can use the standard VPASP templating structure and basically just write the javascript and css to control the scrolling functionality.

I'll see if I can put together a demo over the next few days.

We have done this on Purple Pleasures (www.purplepleasures.com).

The slider/rotator on the front page uses jquery and is called anythingslider.

Hi Lori,

I have a working demo of the slider for featured products now up at http://ecommerceaddons.com/demos/vpasp-jquery/default.asp

This one currently uses the featured products flag in a product record but could be adapted to search for any particular flag in product or content records.

I will put this together as a module shortly with full documentation and make it available for purchase from my site if you are interested.

Cheers,

Hi Lori,

I've made some further additions to this module.

It now has the ability to load from the content table or the products table. This allows you to utilize the scroller in many different ways.

For example, on the demo site at http://ecommerceaddons.com/demos/vpasp-jquery/default.asp the top scroller is loading items from the content table that have the other1 field set to "scroll". These content records are set to hide so they won't show up in other sections of the site, however they can be used by the scroller addon.

The second scroller is looping through the product table to load products flagged for use in it.

Each is able to use a different template to display the content or product information in whatever manner you like.

I will continue to refine the module and document it and have it ready for sale shortly.

Cheers,

Hi Michael,

The scrollers are looking good and I would definitely be interested in them.

3 points of (hopefully constructive) criticism/questions:

1 - There is no way to go back to an image or product. If as a customer I saw a product I was interested in but then it flashed away before I could click on it I would want to go back to that product. In the way you have got it set up I would have to wait for the product to come round again, but I wouldn't know how long I would have to wait for.

2 - On the image scroller can the images be linked, i.e. adverts etc.

3 - On the products, having one product in the display at a time is a waste of space (imo). It would make more sense to display 2 or more (if required) products. In my industry I haven't seen a site with less than 3 products displaying at a time in this manner.

As I said these are meant to be constructive criticisms, please take them in that manners as I like what you have done so far.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the feedback. Always good to get input from others in the early stages of putting something like this together.

In regards to your questions:

1: Next and Previous buttons can be turned on or off as required by passing an attribute to the function that generates the scroller.

2. The images can easily be linked - they simply use a template file much like the rest of the displays in VPASP. You'd just need to alter the template and add your links as required.

3. At this stage only 1 product is supported. I was thinking this would be used more so in the side bar section where you have your top sellers and featured products sections as long vertical lists. Alternatively, since it can be used to load any information from the product table, you might have a highlighted "featured products of the week" banner type section on the homepage where these items loop through.

I have seen the scroller on your site where it shows multiple products and may work that functionality in but at this stage it is not part of the module.

More updates shortly and any further feedback is appreciated.

Cheers,

Michael Dunkley
