I don't think you can do it with standard vpasp. They do have a "flyout menu" (javascript rollover expanding) addon, eg from:

Personally I find the expand-only-on-posting annoying on that sample site; I'd prefer a client-side expand/collapse one instead, either like the vpasp flyout menu, or like our expand/collapse addon:

Whichever kind you go for, you might need to add some extra indexes to the database (eg the categories.highercategoryid value should definitely be indexed if it's not already) to keep it speedy.
