OK, this one has me stumped.

Customer has about 1500 items, each available singly. There are quantity discounts (a total of 6 levels) for each product. Problem is that they are all different... product "A" may have price breaks at quantities of 6, 12, 25, 50, 100, 500 while product "B" may have price breaks at quantities of 10, 20, 50, 75, 100, 250. To further complicate this, the discounts are hard prices, not percentages, and do not follow a standard pattern. Is this even possible with VP-ASP?

Hi,

yes this is possible with VP-ASP, and you can specify whether the discount is a percentage or an actual amount, but it does mean a huge workload for whoever is keying in all the price breaks for each product. If there are a few products which have the same pricing structure there is the option to specify a category specific discount range, or a group for discount option.

I know exactly your pain. We run a promotional products distributorship with the exact situation that you are speaking about. A further issue is that when you are dealing with items less than a dollar each (ie pens) then when you try to place a discount level price less than a dollar the system automatically thinks that you are asking for a % decrease instead. Is there a workaround for this?

Furthermore, when bulk uploading product information is it possible to upload the quantity breaks and respective prices for each item?

For this bit..."Furthermore, when bulk uploading product information is it possible to upload the quantity breaks and respective prices for each item?"......

Back in December 2004-Jan 2005 we built a customised tweak to the product import for someone, so that you could specify qty-discount ranges/prices in csv files and then import them as part of the product import.

eg so that your product csv file to import might look something like this:

catalogid,ccode,qtyrange1,qtyprice1,qtyrange2,qtyprice2....qtyrange5,qtyprice5
1,aaa,1-5,10,6-20,9,...100-200,4
2,bbb,1-15,200,16-30,180....500-1000,120

The tweaked import would then translate those values into standard vpasp product qty discounts data and delete/re-create the relevant qty discount records. The price would always be entered in the csv file as a monetary amount (even if it was under $1), the translation/import process automatically changed qty-prices which were under $1 to the corresponding pct. This meant that it was only the import that needed changing; all the existing discount calculation logic would stay the same as the import process created the data in the format that vpasp expects.

The logic to turn relatively simple qtyrange/price columns to valid vpasp qty discount data was surprisingly complex (eg must allow for not having values in all 5 ranges, needs to rejig things to use the minimumqty and not just the ranges etc)

In the end it took us around a full man-day to get right/done, but was well worth the effort because it made the entry/maintenance of the product qty-discounts so much easier as it could all be done with a simple csv/excel file in a format which was easy to understand/change.

The really annoying thing is that I can't find the code for it at the moment, but if anyone's interested in having the same thing done, let us know and I'll see if I can try and dig it out of backup drives/folders and I'll contact the original client to get them "sponsorship" (ie profit-splits) and then release it as an addon.

It was one of those things that's been in our "potential/pending addons" files for years, but never found its way to being finalised because only a handful of people have ever mentioned it so it wasn't worth the effort.

However, if this kind of logic is going to be part of vpasp v7 then it's worth waiting for v7 instead I guess.

If, on the other hand, you want to display your qty discounts nicely in various formats on your customers' product pages, take a look at:
Quantity Discount Displays for VP-ASP:
http://www.bigyellowkey.com/mysoftware_product_details.asp?prdid=204&opu=n
(the price display on that addon takes account of values, ie pcts, which are under 1.0, and translates them to the relevant prices for the display, similarly for pct displays; either way it looks at the data and then turns it into the relevant format/value for display)

Thank-you for your response. In short, this add-on would be beneficial.
