When planning VP-ASP Shopping Cart Version 8, one of the first and biggest decisions we had to make was whether to continue using a separate mobile site or switch to a responsive design.

It’s no secret that more and more people are now using their mobile devices to shop online, making a working mobile version of your ecommerce store vital if you are to remain competitive in today’s market.

Below are just a few stats on mobile commerce:

  • 75% of mobile shoppers redeemed a coupon from their mobile devices in 2013. Additionally, 80.4% of shoppers said their perception of a retailer would improve if the retailer offered mobile deals and coupons. (Key Ring)

  • 80% of mobile users' purchasing decisions are influenced by the mobile channel, even though they may not use their devices to complete the final purchase. (SAP)

  • 30% of online shopper will abandon a transaction if the experience is not optimized for mobile. (Google)

  • 61% of people have a better opinion of brands when they offer a good mobile experience (Latitude)

  • 57% users say they won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site. (Google)
We recognise the importance of having a mobile compatible store that not only looks great, but works best behind the scenes too, the table below compares the two different approached to mobile device design.

Responsive Design Mobile Site
Look and Feel   With a responsive design, the device automatically adjusts the website according to the screen size (laptop, tablet, mobile) and orientation (landscape or portrait). The website retains it's look and feel, just with a different layout.  A mobile site is a seperate website, which can often look completely different. This is not good for branding.
Domain Preservation / SEO    Responsive design lets you use your existing domain— meaning SEO juice is not diluted between two seperate sites.  With a mobile site, you must create a different domain (e.g. m.domain.com). This dilutes the domain and affects organic search traffic.

It also doubles your website management workload because you have two seperate silos of content to maintain.
Future Proof  Responsive design is forward-thinking because once implemented, it will work on next month's and next year’s devices without having to be re-programmed. Re-working of a mobile site might be needed in order to stay current with next-generation phones and mobile browsers.

As I'm sure you will agree, responsive design appears to be the better option, and the good news for you guys is that's the solution we have gone for!

Any update on release date (Monday, September 1, 2014 00:00)
Any update on a release date. I am looking at changing my store layout. Currently have version 6.5 - if version 8 is coming out soon, maybe worth my while to wait - alternatively and sadly I may have to start looking at other shopping carts as version 7 is behind with whats out there. Version 8 has been promised for quite a while now.-AA - South Africa

Hi guys,

Version 8 is not far away. Converting to being responsive has turned out to be a rather larger task than we had envisioned however it is finally getting closer.
