Most SEO efforts concentrate on getting the homepage of an online store to the top of Google’s rankings. There is nothing wrong with doing this however it is also a good idea to build external links to your product pages; after all, these are the pages that generate income for your ecommerce store.

Most of the time it will be your homepage that is linked to but below are five tactics you can use to get product page links which will in turn give them higher rankings in Google.

1. Send out free samples of your products to bloggers and journalists – If you have a product which you are sure people will love, get in touch with bloggers and journalists and ask if they would like to review it – if they agree to write a review, send them a direct URL to that product page to use when they publish their review.

2. Sponsor local events and charities – Look around to see if there are industry-relevant events or charities you can sponsor. If relevant, give away samples of what you’re selling then ensure the organizers link to your website in their marketing materials and website. For example if you sell sports apparel you could sponsor a local 10km run with your brand of sports clothing / equipment.

3. Write guest blog posts – Search for bloggers in your industry and shoot them an email to see if they are open to publishing guest posts. If they agree, ensure you put a lot of time and effort into writing a post that will be of benefit to the readers of that blog. Look through previous posts and see which got the most comments & shares for ideas on what appeals. When writing your post, don’t ruthlessly plug your own products, this will likely mean your post getting rejected. Instead, add a little bio on yourself at the top of the post with a link to your website. Then if you develop a strong working relationship with the blog owner after a while, they might allow you to add a couple links to your products pages, provided they are relevant and beneficial to readers.

4. Write personalized, creative product descriptions – I’ve mentioned this before in other posts, NEVER use manufacturer’s descriptions for your items. It’s awful for SEO (you will be penalized for duplicate content) and is boring for your customers. Spend some time writing your own unique descriptions. Ensure your descriptions are still accurate and be sure to include relevant keywords in the content. Be original by thinking of the product from your customers’ point of view and write about how those products will benefit them.

5. Take your own product images – Most ecommerce stores use generic manufacturer images for their products, set yourself aside from the competition by using product photos that you have taken yourself. Experiment with different lighting and angles and try placing products in their natural environment rather than against a plain background. Doing this may get you more product page links because people who write about the products that you’re selling are more likely to link to your website because you have better product images and descriptions.

Happy Selling!
